Why senior product leadership is hard to source in this region
The difficulty is not a shortage of talent. It is a positioning problem. Southeast Asia has been marketed to the world as execution capacity: development shops, BPO, staff augmentation, hire-a-team. That market is enormous and it works, but it trained buyers to look here for hands rather than for judgement. So when a founder searches for a product leader in Asia, the results are agencies selling headcount, not individuals accountable for product decisions.
The consequence is that the small number of people in this region with founder-level product history are effectively invisible, because they do not fit the category the search results are built around. That is the honest reason this page exists. It is not a claim that regional talent is undervalued in general. It is a narrow claim about one profile being hard to find: someone here who has actually carried a product from nothing to revenue, raised money against it, and sat in the room when it was working and when it was not.
The timezone question, with the actual numbers
Most remote-hiring pages wave at this. Here is the arithmetic. I am at UTC+8 and the Philippines does not observe daylight saving, so my offset never moves. Yours might, which shifts these windows by an hour seasonally.
- London and Dublin. Your 9am is my 4pm. Effectively a shared working day, and the easiest overlap of any Western market.
- Berlin, Amsterdam, Zurich. Your 9am is my 3pm. Same as above. Most of your day is inside mine.
- US Eastern. Your 9am is my 9pm. That gives a genuine three-hour window each day at your morning and my evening, which is enough for standups, customer calls and decisions.
- US Pacific. This is the hard one and I will not pretend otherwise. Your 5pm is my 8am. The workable pattern is one fixed window at your end of day, plus asynchronous everything else.
- Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei. Identical or near-identical to my hours. Full overlap.
- Sydney and Melbourne. Two to three hours ahead of me. Effectively full overlap.
The practical answer for a US Pacific team is that you should not hire anyone in this region for a role that needs constant synchronous presence. If the role needs someone in your standup every morning at 9am your time, hire locally. What works from here is ownership of a workstream where decisions are written down, progress is visible without a meeting, and one reliable live window carries the conversation that genuinely needs voices.
How I run an engagement across that gap
- Decisions in writing, by default. Every scope call and priority trade-off lands in a document with the reasoning attached, so nobody is blocked waiting for my morning.
- Recorded walkthroughs instead of live demos. When something is ready to look at, you get a short recording you can watch when you are awake, then we discuss in the live window.
- One fixed synchronous window. Agreed at the start and held. Not "we will find time", which across twelve hours means nobody does.
- Prototypes as the argument. When a debate would take three async round trips over three days, I build the thing instead. That is the part of this role that survives a timezone gap best, because working software does not need a meeting to be understood.
